One of the most often quoted verses by the prosperity preachers, and in particular from the movement "Word of Faith" is John 10:10:
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy . I came that they may have life , and it have it abundantly ."
The problem is when in some strange way , in the interpretation of the verse, the word "abundantly" from adverb becomes an adjective for " life." Then begins the justification and validation of materialistic pursuit of the soul to prosperity - after all , that's why Jesus came -- to give us abundant life ! And not regenerated or asleep mind feels rush of bliss ...
Did Jesus in "might have life abundantly" mean what we imagine in "abundant life " ?
1. The word of life here is " Zoe " not psyche ( soul life ) , not bios ( biological life ) . This is divine , resurrected , eternal life of God.
2 . Having a divine life abundantly is to spring from thee, like rivers of living water .
3 . The whole verse is structured as two opposing courses of action - the actions of the thief who comes only to " steal, kill and destroy " the actions of the Good Shepherd , who came to give us life instead of death, and to have this divine life abundantly.
Where is the impudence? Throughout all the tenth chapter of John, Jesus opposes the thieves and robbers of himself - the Good Shepherd . And these same thieves and robbers , wolves in sheep's clothing began to quote this verse and shout " Thief ! " They say, " The devil wants to steal your joy, happiness , peace , prosperity , your best life now, your self-esteem , a good image for yoursef -- the abundant life , but do not let him , because Jesus came for just that purpose -- for you to have an abundant life, for you to have these things! " ...
At the same time robbing us of divine life Zoe , replacing it with the lure of the soul "Psyche" life, full of transitory things of this material world which will one day burn, will melt and what will remain for you, dear brother, dear sister?...
Do you really think that Jesus gave His life so that we have plenty of ash and slag? ...
P.S. All this does not mean God doesn't want to bless you. But if the love for money is in our hearts, it means money is our idol. If the love for God is in our hearts, God would bless us.
"Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Mathew 6:31-33
